Sedation

Conscious sedation allows anxious patients to be relaxed and comfortable during during dental procedures. Oral sedation (tablet) and nitrous oxide (laughing gas) sedation are safe and highly effective methods to managing dental anxiety.

What is Sedation?

Some patients experience a great deal of anxiety when in the dental office.  So much so, that it makes it difficult for them to tolerate dental treatment. Fortunately, there are different forms of conscious sedation that will allow patients to be awake but relaxed and tolerate dental procedures.

Things to Know About Sedation

1

Oral Sedation:

Oral sedation commonly uses a class of medications called benzodiazepines.

These medications come in the form of tablets and are taken 1 hour prior to the dental procedure. The advantage of oral sedation is the ease of taking the medication. The disadvantage is that the effect of the medication usually far outlasts the duration of the dental procedure, and patients on oral sedation require a chaperone.

2

Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) Sedation:

This form of medication is continuously inhaled from a mask that sits over the patient's nose throughout the duration of the procedure.  The advantage of this method is that its effects can be felt immediately, and its effects can be stopped within minutes of turning the Nitrous Oxide off.  As a result, patients are able to attend the appointment on their own and drive.
